Introducing a new initiative under our Bright Futures program in partnership with Junior League of Evanston – North Shore….Female Fundis!

Vocational training can be a great way to address youth unemployment. However, female youth are often encouraged to focus only on trades that have been deemed best-suited for women such as hairdressing or catering but that also hold less potential for stable employment.

Our first class of Female Fundis (fundi is Kiswahili for the job category that includes building and repairing) includes eleven women who will be joining courses in electrical repair, plumbing, and mechanics. By all joining these courses at the same time, they will be able to support each other and work together.

As one of the women wrote in her application, “I want to join this course because I believe and want to prove that women can do anything that men can do. I am looking forward to improving my life and earning a living.”
