In Memory of Ken Okoth:

Ken Okoth was a visionary leader, public servant, and long-time supporter and partner of Uweza’s work. He dedicated his life to making a difference in his community and his efforts have impacted countless lives. Devoted to issues of empowerment for children, youth, and women, Ken has been a teacher, coach, mentor, director, and professor at various institutions including the Potomac School, Georgetown University, and the University of Dar es Salaam.

Through his Children of Kibera Foundation, he made it possible for Kibera students to receive a quality education  and many of the program’s graduated scholars are now leaders and changemakers in the community. Ken believed strongly in the power of education and worked with the goal of “Elimu Kwanza” (Education First). As MP of Kibra, his office renovated five public schools and built two new public high schools, including an all-girls high school.

He revamped the application and awarding process of the constituency’s bursary fund, which is intended to provide funding support for students. The fund has supported thousands of high school, college, and university students during his two terms and the transparency of the process has seen record numbers of students now applying for the fund. He purchased two new school buses, created a school greenhouse and gardening project, and invested in the creation or expansion of school computer labs and libraries. He created an annual musical festival, supported sports programs and tournaments, and addressed youth unemployment through through investments in income generating activities for women and youth.

Ken was a true public servant and selfless leader in every sense. He was accessible to everyone and never hesitated to provide support, encouragement, and mentorship to everyone who needed it. He has supported Uweza Foundation’s work by purchasing artwork, connecting us with supporters, attending and promoting our events and programs, and providing advice, mentorship, and guidance.

All donations made to Uweza in Ken’s memory will continue to honor his dedication to transforming the lives of youth in Kibera and will be designated in consultation with his family.
